The Politics of Hair in North Korea, and in the United States

Every once in a while, a liberal hater will post something at this site about my gorgeous, flowing hair, suggesting that I should cut it and start sporting the sort of do favored by school nurses and lunch ladies; that is, very short, unfeminine and unappealing. You could call it a “Napolitano.” Fat chance! Give me a head with hair. Long beautiful hair. Yes, the Broadway show “Hair” was, and is, particularly stupid, especially the part where they take off all their clothes for no reason, but you get the point.

As it turns out, it wasn’t only in 1960′s America that long hair symbolized freedom and rebellion against authority. From The Telegraph UK story, “North Korea issues a list of 28 approved ‘socialist’ hairstyles. It seems tyrants hate long hair”:

According to a Taiwanese website, the socialist paradise (Land of Milk and Honey, albeit rationed) has issued a list of 28 state-approved haircuts. They are not pretty. Unmarried women must have short hair but married women can go wild with piled-high curls that recall Barbara Stanwyck at her most villainous. Life for men’s hair is brutish and short: “The hair of the country’s young men should be less than 5 cm long and they should have a haircut once every 15 days … Older men … are allowed to rock out with hair as long as 7 cm.”

The writer, Tim Stanley, goes on to point out that, while this sort of extreme intrusion and control over every aspect of human life does have a point in a totalitarian regime; specifically, to nip any counter-revoltionary individualism in the bud. First it’s long hair, and next thing you know people want to wear jeans, sunglasses and friendship bracelets.

In our own country, recently we’ve seen hair used for political purposes. How many stories, in print and in writing, have we seen over the last couple of weeks about Michelle Obama’s bangs? I wish we had seen half as many stories about what happened in Benghazi on September 11, and the fact that David “I Need That Lifestyle Lift Thing” Axelrod deliberately lied about it on the Sunday before the election on Fox News Sunday as we have about this woman’s haircut. Other subjects that those crusading seekers of truth in the Lame Stream Media have avoided reporting by spending all their time on foolishness like Mooch’s mop:

The fact that most of the jobs created during Obama’s “recovery,” which are supposed to replace the jobs lost in the so-called “Great Recession,” have been low-paying service industry jobs. During Republican administrations, these are called “hamburger flipper” jobs. Not now.

The number of people who have left the workforce during the Obama years.

The fact that many people who are now employed are working part-time when they would prefer to work full-time.

The fact that “[i]n Obama’s recovery nearly all the job growth has occurred in people over 55.” (Source for this quote, and the facts about the economy: David Freddoso’s excellent book, Spin Masters. He appeared on the show on 2-17-13.

Yet, the low-infos, who think they are well-informed because they watch pointless “news” shows like “Good Morning America,” are spoon fed pap about Michelle Obama’s bangs, “her” (planted by the U.S. Park Service) garden, and her countless TV appearances, featuring dancing with Jimmy Fallon in drag (he was in drag. She just looks like it), talking about her bangs (AGAIN) with Rachael Ray, or being interviewed by Robin Roberts, all North Korea-style “cult of the personality” stuff.

Will even the Obama cultists eventually tire of this incessant propaganda?
