I hope that, after they learn those essential lessons about long-suffering polar bears, and the evils of capitalism, imperialism and racism that Amerika has inflicted on the rest of the world, American middle schoolers can spend a few minutes learning about the attack on Pearl Harbor, which occurred 70 years ago today. I fear that if they do, the emphasis will be on the shameful internment of the Japanese, which will be cited yet another example of the afore-mentioned racism, a point of view expressed by that brilliant historian and public policy analyst, Tom Hanks. The insightful and erudite Victor Davis Hanson demolishes Mr. Hanks’ ahistorical foolishness in this excellent piece, Is Tom Hanks Unhinged?
I also recommend Mr. Hanson’s other piece, Pearl Harbor and 9/11, which contains the following paragraph:
Just as the Japanese — in their fanatical banzai yells; embrace of suicide; and promises of death to weak, corrupt, and soft Westerners — misjudged us, so too the terrorists bragged that we were either too wealthy, too cowardly, or too impotent to retaliate in kind. And just as in the months after Pearl Harbor — at Midway and Guadalcanal — we proved the fanatics wrong on all counts, so too our present-day fascist attackers in Afghanistan are mostly either dead, captured, or hiding in caves. Bin Laden has learned the same lesson as did General Tojo: Shouting, threats, and a brutal and maniacal creed are no substitute for West Point, GM, Caltech, Sears, the U.S. Senate, and the American soldier.
Ah yes, the American soldier. God bless you, veterans, and those serving today to preserve the freedom that we enjoy today. I shudder to think what this world would be like had the United States and Great Britain not led the free world to destroy the evil that threatened to plunge the entire planet into fascist darkness in the 1940’s, and which continues to lurk, hoping that we adopt the view famously stated by Barack Obama’s political mentor, Bill Ayers, who said that the notion of a America as a great and fair nation makes him want to “puke.” Gee, Billy, having just recalled your disgusting and contemptible words, I know exactly how you feel.
To make myself feel better, I’m going to hug a veteran today, and I recommend that you do the same.
