The Senate immigration bill’s authors acknowledged Tuesday that their legislation does not require illegal immigrants to pay all back taxes, saying it would be too difficult to make them ante up everything they might owe.

Sen. Charles E. Schumer, the New York Democrat who is chief sponsor of the bill, said illegal immigrants by definition are living in the shadows, and requiring them to reconstruct their pay history could be tough — and potentially keep many of them from legalization.

Sen. Rubio, don’t walk, run, away from this bill.

Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, long considered a Republican swing vote on the 18-member Senate Judiciary Committee, announced Tuesday night that he will vote the comprehensive immigration reform bill out of committee after the panel approved language relaxing restrictions on employers seeking to hire foreign workers for high-tech jobs. But he cautioned that he may vote against the bill on Senate floor if other changes to the legislation are not made.

Earlier Tuesday, the committee voted down an amendment proposed by Texas Sen. Ted Cruz that would have stripped out the Gang of Eight’s foundational principle that qualified undocumented immigrants to the United States should be eligible to work towards full citizenship.  The amendment failed 5-13 , with Hatch joining Gang of Eight Republican Sens. Jeff Flake and Lindsey Graham in voting with Democrats against the measure. Cruz, discussed as a possible 2016 GOP presidential candidate, said the inclusion of the path to citizenship would “only encourage others to violate the law.” The Tea Party-affiliated senator added that, if the pathway remains in the bill, the reform effort will be voted down in the Republican-controlled House. That assertion was flatly rejected by Schumer, who retorted that “if we don’t have a path to citizenship, there is no reform.” Another Cruz-sponsored amendment that would have made undocumented immigrants ineligible for means-tested federal benefits failed 6-12.   Hatch voted in support of that measure.

Oh great. We wouldn’t want them to be ineligible for benefits, would we? This is not good news. I think it’s time to ramp up the pressure on our representatives.

Sharyl Attkisson, the Emmy-award winning CBS News investigative reporter, says that her personal and work computers have been compromised and are under investigation.

“I can confirm that an intrusion of my computers has been under some investigation on my end for some months but I’m not prepared to make an allegation against a specific entity today as I’ve been patient and methodical about this matter,” Attkisson told POLITICO on Tuesday. “I need to check with my attorney and CBS to get their recommendations on info we make public.”

A camera set up by a Tasmanian man to record “paranormal activity” in his home instead picked up an extramarital affair between his 28-year-old wife and his 16-year-old son.

According to prosecutors, the woman, who has been the man’s “de facto partner” for the past several years, entered her stepson’s room one day last October to talk about his driving lessons.

Is that what we call it now, “driving lessons?”

It breaks my heart to see the photos of these precious pets. Their owners and all those who suffered in yesterday’s unbelievably damaging tornado are in my prayers. This horrible tragedy is a reminder to (1) make sure you have current photos of your pets in case you need to try to find them, and (2) hug them, pet them and enjoy their very special unconditional love every single day. Doing just that without waiting for your significant other is a new form of cheating dubbed by New York Magazine as Netflix Adultery. And in a recent survey conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of Netflix, 51% of those in a relationship would “cheat” on their spouse/partner/significant other by streaming a TV program that was intended to be watched together.

Sneaky.
