Thank you, Gov. Snyder for having the courage to admit you were wrong about Syrian refugees coming to your state.
As recently as September, Gov. Rick Snyder of Michigan thought it was a terrific idea to import as many as Syrian refugees as possible. From a Detroit News story, ironically dated September 11, 2015:
Michigan, already home to one of the largest communities of Syrian immigrants in the nation, can expect even more in the coming months as lawmakers warm up to the idea of welcoming more people from the war-torn country.
President Barack Obama on Thursday directed his administration to prepare to accept at least 10,000 more Syrian refugees during the next year. The country is on track to accept about 1,500 Syrians this year, according to White House, but that’s merely a fraction of the 11.6 million people who have been displaced from their homes during the brutal 4 1/2-year civil war in Syria.
U.S. allies in Europe are struggling to accommodate tens of thousands of refugees from the Middle East and Africa, many of whom are fleeing regions seized by Islamic State militants.
The prospect of accepting the migrants has support in Michigan, where about 4,000 refugees were resettled last year, with more than half of those from Iraq, according to data from the U.S. Office of Refugee Resettlement within the Department of Health & Human Services.
“Gov. Snyder believes Michigan should be a welcoming state,” said Dave Murray, spokesman for Gov. Rick Snyder. “We are open to working with the federal government to see if there is a role that Michigan can play with this issue.”
Read the whole story to learn how (NATCH!) “[a]ctivists in Metro Detroit’s Arab community are pushing for the federal government to offer more aid to refugees from the Middle East and Africa.” Translation: more welfare for these “refugees.”
Yesterday, in the wake of the Paris terror attack, Gov. Snyder had the courage to admit that he was wrong, and did an about face. From USA Today:
Gov. Rick Snyder’s decision to suspend efforts to bring Syrian refugees to Michigan in light of the deadly terrorist attacks in Paris on Friday has sparked controversy and launched the state into the national debate of how to protect U.S. citizens while providing a haven for those who desperately need help.
Snyder’s office released a statement Sunday saying the state would not be accepting any Syrian refugees until the U.S. Department of Homeland Security fully reviewed its procedures.
“Michigan is a welcoming state and we are proud of our rich history of immigration,” Snyder said in the statement. “But our first priority is protecting the safety of our residents.”
Seems like a no brainer, doesn’t it? I guess that’s why, as you heard on yesterday’s edition of The Teri O’Brien Show, Obama Regime apparatchik announced on all the Sunday shows that they are doubling down on their plans to import these unvetted Muslims into America. No brain, just ideology and cynical political calculation.
Naturally the usual suspects are whining about the governor’s decision, and lying about out ability to vet these “refugees.”
Maged Moughni, a Dearborn attorney and Arab-American advocate, agreed, saying “it’s uncalled for … I think it’s really unfair.”
“It’s doing what ISIS wants. … He’s just basically buying into what ISIS wants: Muslims against the West … Gov. Snyder is buying into the rhetoric.”
“I can understand being cautious, but to suspend it is wrong,” Moughni said.
Wrong Counselor. ISIS has told us that they plan to use this “refugee” crisis to infiltrate the West. Did you miss that?
Here’s the best comment, from a representative of an organization that gets MILLIONS of federal dollars for their “charitable work,” Lutheran Social Services.
Sean de Four, vice president of child and family services with Lutheran Social Services of Michigan, said the U.S. has a moral obligation to help with what he called “a humanitarian crisis the world has not seen since World War II.”
The agency has helped resettle about 1,800 to 2,000 refugees in Michigan over the past year; about 200 of them are from Syria and many others are from Iraq, another war-torn country.
“I certainly understand and appreciate Gov. Snyder’s desire to be cautious and put the safety of Michiganders first,” de Four said. But “the State Department already uses an overabundance of caution in its screening of refugees before they gained entry into the United States. In fact, refugees spend an average of five to seven years in refugee camps being screened and background checks before access to any country.”
Wrong. Either you are lying or you don’t know what you are talking about. As I have you repeatedly, the FBI has admitted that is not possible to vet these people.
Let me take this opportunity to remind you again that you are not powerless. Call, email, or even snail mail, your member of Congress and the leadership to let them know that you agree with Gov. Snyder. See this post, and this one for information on how to do that.
Just say no to importing potential jihadists!
