My Close Encounter with Newt: Today on the Teri O’Brien Show

This coming Tuesday, we’ll experience the most significant, earth-shaking event since last season’s finale of “The Bachelor,” the Iowa caucuses. Not to be dismissive of our Hawkeye friends, but let’s get real. As Michael Barone pointed out in his excellent piece, As Iowa Goes, So Goes Iowa:

In the five presidential nominating cycles with active Iowa Republican caucus competition, the Hawkeye State has voted for the eventual Republican nominee only twice—in 1996 for Bob Dole, in 2000 for George W. Bush—and only once was the Iowa winner elected president.

One thing’s for sure: Iowa doesn’t pick the winner. It picks the losers.

What accounts for the apparent popularity of Ron Paul? Do a large percentage Iowa republicans really think we should replace the Marxist in the Oval Office with a 9-11 truther? Or are Paul supporters just excited at the prospect of legalized weed? I think we know the answer there is an enthusiastic yes,and by that I mean as enthusiastic as one can be when wasted.

If Newt doesn’t finish in the top three, can he survive to fight another day in South Carolina and Florida? Why hasn’t he fought back against the ridiculously incessant barrage of negative ads directed at him? Was he crying last Friday because every hotel room has a television? Is his real problem something that no one wants to mention, certainly no male commentator?

We’ll unpack this whole Iowa circus, and get your thoughts and predictions.

Of course, we’ll also talk about the year that was, and speaking of reminiscing, as promised, all share the story behind the photo posted here.

Tune in Sunday for the rest of the story.
