On the Anniversary of the 9/11 Attacks, It’s Worth Asking Why the Obama Administration is Enabling Terrorists

It was another beautiful September Tuesday, with clear blue skies, making the incredibly unreal images on the tv screens all the more horrifying by contrast. Just 24 hours before, the news was all shark attacks and Chandra Levy. The evening before, I had the students in the college Nutrition class I was teaching do a fun group exercise using print ads from tabloids, in which they identified bogus weight loss claims. Then we found out we were at war for years. We just hadn’t realized it.

Then the 9/11 attacks happened.

It’s not as if we shouldn’t have. The World Trade Center had been bombed before, on February 26, 1993. Six people were killed in that attack. One of the men convicted in that bombing was Omar Abdel-Rahman aka “the Blind Sheik.” He is currently serving a life sentence at the Butler Federal Medical Center in North Carolin for seditious conspiracy that included the 1993 World Trade Center attack and a foiled plot to bomb New York City landmarks, including the United Nations and the Lincoln and Holland tunnels. He was also convicted of trying to arrange Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak’s assassination.

In 2005, “civil rights” (read radical leftist, kindred spirit of Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn) lawyer Lynne Stewart was convicted of the crimes of providing material assistance to terrorists and lying to the government for distributing messages from the Blind Sheik to members of his organization, the Islamic Group (the IG). During the wiretapped conversations that led to the convictions, it emerged that the bombing of U.S.S. Cole in October 2000, which killed 17 sailors, was carried out to help secure the release of the Blind Sheik. (This whole report on the wiretaps from the Smoking Gun is worth reading.)

The IG has been designated a foreign terrorist organization under federal law, which is why Ms. Stewart and her accomplices are now contemplating social justice behind bars. Why then is the Obama administration assisting the IG in their efforts to free the Blind Sheik? As our guest Andrew McCarthy, who prosecuted the Blind Sheik, wrote:

Nevertheless, as detailed here a few days back, the Obama administration issued a visa to Hani Nour Eldin, a member of the Islamic Group, and then hosted him for talks in Washington. Eldin accompanied a contingent of other members of Egypt’s new Islamist government — which is led by the Muslim Brotherhood and in which the Islamic Group is a coalition partner. Topping Eldin’s agenda, reportedly, was to petition the administration to release the Blind Sheikh. The Obama administration has since stonewalled when pressed by members of Congress and the media to explain why and how it came to issue a visa and play host to a member of a designated terrorist organization given that providing assistance to such organizations is a serious federal crime.

I suggest we keep this fact in mind when we hear Obama, Biden and their surrogates screeching that “Osama bin Laden is Dead and GM is Alive!!!” We have repeatedly discussed the reality of the “success” of the GM bailout. It’s worth asking what good it is to kill bin Laden while we facilitate those who want to release the man who inspired him.
