Could You End Up Owing $407,000 in Medical Bills? That’s What Happened to This Las Vegas Man Thanks to Obamacare

I wonder if Sen. Harry Reid has heard of this guy? If he has, I wonder if he would call him a liar …From the Las Vegas Review Journal:

The hospital bills are hitting Larry Basich’s mailbox. That would be OK if Basich had health insurance. But he doesn’t. Thing is, he should be covered. Basich, 62, bought a plan through the state’s Nevada Health Link insurance exchange in the fall. He’s been paying monthly premiums since November. Yet the Las Vegan is stranded in a no-man’s-land where no carrier claims him, and his tab is mounting: Basich owes $407,000 for care received in January and February, when his policy was supposed to be in effect. Instead, he’s covered only for March and beyond. Basich has begged for weeks for help from the exchange and its contractor, Xerox. But Basich’s insurance broker said Xerox seems more interested in lawyering up and covering its hide than in working out Basich’s problems. Nor is Basich the only client facing plan-selection errors through the exchange, she added. … Basich paid his first premium on Nov. 21, and within days the exchange withdrew the $160.77 payment from his money-market savings account. Because Basich paid a month before the Dec. 23 deadline, his coverage was to begin Jan. 1. Weeks ticked by, but Basich received nothing to confirm he had insurance. Nevada Health Link kept telling him he was enrolled, but UnitedHealthcare said he wasn’t in their system. Basich’s predicament went critical on Dec. 31, when he had a heart attack. His treatment, which included a triple bypass on Jan. 3, resulted in $407,000 in medical bills in January and February that no insurer is covering. Basich and his insurance broker, Tamar Burch of Branch Benefits Consultants, said the issue appears to be confusion at the state exchange. Xerox’s system says Basich chose a plan from another insurer, Nevada Health CO-OP, even though Basich has paperwork that shows he selected MyHPNSilver1. In short, Xerox can’t seem to decide where Basich belongs, Burch said. So the exchange is trying to compromise, putting Basich with Nevada Health CO-OP for January and February, when he incurred his bills, and with UnitedHealthcare from this month on. But CO-OP officials say Basich is not their member. Nevada Health CO-OP CEO Tom Zumtobel told the exchange board on Feb. 27 that the nonprofit carrier spent seven days with Xerox determining Basich’s eligibility, only to find that Basich hadn’t chosen the group’s coverage. “If he had picked our health plan, we would be advocating for a solution. But he didn’t pick us,” Zumtobel said. “We need someone on the board to advocate for him.” Why have four months passed without a resolution? “Xerox is truly out of their league. They need to understand they are an administrator, they are not an insurance company,” Burch said. “They need to understand their boundaries. They don’t understand this world. Everybody is at the mercy of Xerox, and they are not doing this right.”

The story by Jennifer Robison goes on to detail the bureaucratic nightmare that is Mr. Basich’s new reality. Of course, the story tries to create the impression that the reason for Mr. Basich’s misery is the incompetence or venality of Xerox, when in reality the real reason is the unworkable, ridiculous Obamacare scheme. Mr. Basich, you should blow in a call to your state’s senior U.S. senator and tell him what you’re experiencing. He is on the record as stating that Obamacare horror stories are manufactured by evil doers like those wicked Koch Brothers, one of whom just gave $100 million to New York Presbyterian Hospital.

Declare Victory and Leave the Field: Today The Teri O’Brien Show, 12-1-13

Today the Obama regime declared that they have met their goal of fixing their “troubled” Obamacare website, so bedeviled by “glitches,” by which they mean, according to The Washington Post, that

“While we strive to innovate and improve our outreach and systems for reaching consumers, we believe we have met the goal of having a system that will work smoothly for the vast majority of users.”

This morning they released an 8-page report saying that they had fixed 400 bugs, resulting in a vastly-improved user experience.

“The bottom line, on Dec. 1 is night and day from where it was on Oct. 1,” when the site was launched, he told reporters.

As a result of the improvements: the average system response time is under 1 second; the error rate is “consistently well below 1 percent”; the online system is stable — not crashing — more than 90 percent of the time; as many as 50,000 shoppers can use the site at the same time, or up to 800,000 visits a day.

At the same time, the report cautioned that more work needs to be done in the weeks and months ahead “to improve and enhance the website and continue to improve the consumer experience.” Officials have also said repeatedly that consumers might still encounter difficulties and urged them to use the call center and seek help from specially trained personnel.

In a related story, Jeff Bezos of (where you can, and should get the terrific e-book, The ABC’s of Barack Obama: Understanding God’s Greatest Gift to America) proudly proclaimed that during this Christmas shopping season, his company was able to ensure that 90% of orders were timely and accurate, unless too many people tried to use, prompting him to recommend that people delay their shopping to after January 2, when things should go a lot more smoothly!

Surprisingly, questions about Obamacare remain; specifically, (1) the issue of protecting the privacy of very personal information, which has been completely unaddressed, (2) the fact that many insurance companies are reporting a very high rate of errors on the “back end,” as in, by the time the Nigerian identity thieves are done sifting through that very personal information and it makes its way to the company that is supposed to provide your insurance policy, it is often inaccurate, duplicative, or garbled, making it impossible for them to write the coverage, and (3) the networks of physicians and hospitals available to those lucky enough to get insurance from these exchanges is minuscule compared to the ones they had before they got their “transition letters,” unless of course, they are even luckier, and are forced onto Medicaid, in which case they won’t be able to see a doctor at all, but, in fairness, there is a little-known provision of Obamacare that may, under certain limited circumstances, allow you Skype with a vet tech on alternate Tuesdays.

What happens if more than 50,000 people try to “shop” (another Orwellian use of a word, usually reserved for voluntary transactions between a willing buyer and a willing seller) on the Obamacare site? What happens if people think they have been purchased coverage on this ridiculous fiasco of a website, only to learn after January 1 that they are not covered? What happens when people discover that they are going to face jaw-dropping increases in premiums and deductibles? What happens when people learn that they cannot in fact continue to see the doctors they have trusted for decades?

Move along. Nothing to see here, except maybe the $1m+ dollars the Obama administration gave to a left-wing “non partisan” group for a propaganda campaign. Apparently, the incessant hectoring from Moochelle Antoinette and Organizing for Action, encouraging you to start fights on Thanksgiving about Obamacare wasn’t enough. We are starting to get some video about those conversations. Suffice it so say, it didn’t go as OFA hoped.

Meanwhile, all of the (Un)Affordable Care Act mandates have been delayed, except, of course, the individual mandate. You have until December 23 to get the health insurance that your benevolent federal government is requiring you to buy, so get busy!

We’ll also have a 2nd amendment update, featuring Nanny Bloomberg, and address a genuine irony: so-called same sex marriage, which was only possible after the institution of marriage had been destroyed by the 1960’s “sexual revolution,” may actually result in a return to the days when divorce was legally prohibited.

Speaking of marriage, life lessons from Barack and Michelle, including about how to have a good marriage.

Our special guest, Prof. Jonathan Haidt, social psychologist and author of The Rational Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and ReligionHe will help us try to understand how we can enjoy our holidays, even with your aging hippie Aunt Sally, who LOVES Hillary Clinton, and your nephew, home from college stuffed with fresh indoctrination from his liberal professors.

More Shoes Dropping from Obamacare Centipede

Get ready. From the Wall Street Journal, “Companies Prepare to Pass More Health Costs to Workers.”

Companies are bracing for an influx of participants in their insurance plans due to the health-care overhaul, adding to pressure to shift more of the cost of coverage to employees.

Many employers are betting that the Affordable Care Act’s requirement that all Americans have health insurance starting in 2014 will bring more people into their plans who have previously opted out. That, along with other rising expenses, is prompting companies to raise workers’ premium contributions, steer them toward high-deductible plans and charge them more to cover family members.

The changes as companies roll out their health plans for 2014 aren’t solely the result of the ACA. Employers have been pushing more of the cost of providing health insurance on to their workers for years, and firms that aren’t booking much sales growth due to the sluggish economy are under heavy pressure to keep expenses down.

Someone’s got to put the cash in Obama’s stash so that we can correct the unfairness that has existed for centuries in what Moochelle called this mean country, right?

Ward Cleaver. pay back is a bitch, right?

Carter 2.0 to Iran-Give Nukes a Chance: Today The Teri O’Brien Show, 11-24-13

Whether it’s the democrats in the U.S. Senate, or the Iranians, going nuclear is all the rage.

In yet another brilliant move, the Dear Reader’s regime tells Iran “if you like your enriched uranium, you can keep your enriched uranium,” and, Bitter Clinger, unlike what he told you about your health insurance policy, your doctor, and your hospital, he isn’t lying to the Iranians. Perhaps, he’s confused. The speech that Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei  made last week, in which he called Israel a “rabid dog,” and accused the United States of war crimes, could have been written by Rev. Jeremiah Wright. A state sponsor of terrorism with a bomb. What could possibly go wrong? We’ve seen this movie before. It was called “North Korea,” and “Iran” is the sequel. Sec. of State John “Lurch” Kerry assures us that the deal does not include any “right to enrich” uranium. The Iranians disagree, and at least two senators say that the agreement includes a right to enrich. MMM …who to believe? A member of the Obama regime, or the Iranians? Tough call. If Iran gets a nuclear weapon, will Barack tell us that he is sorry the world finds itself in a much more dangerous place because of assurances they got from him?

Meanwhile, the tiny man with the huge wallet is at it again. As if making idiotic remarks about the Time Square bomber, trying to micromanage our eating habits, and insinuating himself into elections thousands of miles from New York City weren’t enough, now he’s trying to get you to start heated arguments with your family on Thanksgiving. His gun grabbing group has helpfully put out a list of talking points for you to use. Are you game? No, and please don’t shoot me!

Obama’s lawless party continues its shredding of tradition and the rule of law, along with, of course, that pesky “document of negative liberties,” the Constitution. Their latest exercise of raw power is their suspension of the “advice and consent” provision contained in Art. II, Section 2 by invoking the so-called “nuclear option,” something Sen. Reid had agreed with Sen. Mitch McConnell (D-KY) that he would not do.

Be ahead of the curve. Tune in today 4-6 pm Central, for the rest of the story.

Obama’s Hidden Plan to Bailout Insurance Company Cronies: Today The Teri O’Brien Show, 11-17-13

On Friday, we noted that after spending nearly four years demonizing “bad apple” insurance companies for selling his simple-minded subjects “substandard” insurance policies, made illegal by his signature “achievement,” suddenly His Royal Highness King Barack has decided that he wants to “work together” to make sure that they can resume doing just that. He invited insurance executives to the White House to apologize to them for all those mean things he said, and to have a friendly exchange of ideas. No, not really. He invited them to experience the Chicago Way, as in “Nice little company you have there. Shame if anything happened to it.” Of course, it’s not all stick. It turns out there could be a little carrot for the insurance companies if they know what’s good for them and play ball. We’ll unpack that on today’s show.

Faced with the undeniable reality that the One knowingly lied, over and over again, then lied about lying, hiding behind phrases like “ended up not being accurate,” his acolytes are becoming even more unhinged. Guys, is it really racist to point out the premeditated deception that allowed your man crush to get re-elected under false pretenses? And do you really think the millions who were deceived and who no longer have the insurance policies they liked give a rat’s rear end about Obama’s political future? Why are Republicans giving B.Hussein political cover? Faced with the reality of his plummeting poll numbers on trustworthiness, will Obama accelerate his lawlessness, this time trying to legalize millions of illegals by executive fiat?

Another Friday, another Obama administration attempt to sneak something unintentionally hilarious past us. This time, Eric Holder, attempting to avoid contempt of Congress charges for failing to turn over Fast and Furious documents, asserts—wait for it—separation of powers as a reason. Seriously? This argument from the administration that decides which portions of federal statutes it will decline to enforce?

Back in the good old days, “love and marriage go together like a horse and carriage.” In the age of Obama, it’s gun ownership and racist attitudes, at least according to one “social scientist.”

Be ahead of the curve. Tune in today 4-6 pm Central, for the rest of the story.

Obamacare Exchanges: Even Obama Supporters Aren’t Dumb Enough to Go for This Deal

I know that Obamacare was designed to fail. I don’t think, though, that B.Hussein wanted it to fail this soon.

Of course, none of the following information is news to readers of this site or listeners to The Teri O’Brien Show, but apparently many are SHOCKED that when the federal government demands that the Downtrodden and the Oppressed be given free stuff, somebody has to pay for it. Duh! It was obvious that once medical underwriting, as in no exclusion of “pre-existing conditions,” was prohibited, we’re no longer talking insurance. We’re talking income redistribution, confiscating earnings from the young and healthy, forcing them to pay a lot for very little in order to pay for the old and sick. Unfortunately, many Lo-Fo voters somehow couldn’t connect those very obvious dots, even though they are so big, you can see them from space. From the Chicago Tribune:

Adam Weldzius, a nurse practitioner, considers himself better informed than most when it comes to the inner workings of health insurance. But even he wasn’t prepared for the pocketbook hit he’ll face next year under President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul.

If the 33-year-old single father wants the same level of coverage next year as what he has now with the same insurer and the same network of doctors and hospitals, his monthly premium of $233 will more than double. If he wants to keep his monthly payments in check, the Carpentersville resident is looking at an annual deductible for himself and his 7-year-old daughter of $12,700, a more than threefold increase from $3,500 today.

Wait–that’s impossible. When he was conning, I mean, selling the “Affordable” Care Act, the One told us that if we liked the insurance we had we could keep it, and that our premium cost would be reduced by $2500 a year. How can this be?

Many Illinoisans buying health coverage on their own next year will face a similar dilemma spurred by the health care overhaul: pay higher monthly insurance premiums or run the risk of having to shell out thousands more in deductibles for health care if they get sick.

To promote the Oct. 1 debut of the exchanges, the online marketplaces where consumers can shop and buy insurance, Obama administration and Illinois officials touted the lower-than-expected monthly premiums that would make insurance more affordable for millions of Americans. But a Tribune analysis shows that 21 of the 22 lowest-priced plans offered on the Illinois health insurance exchange for Cook County have annual deductibles of more than $4,000 for an individual and $8,000 for family coverage.

Let’s see. Pay higher premiums, and higher deductibles, Serf. What’s not to like?

Although millions of Americans will be eligible for federal assistance to help offset some of those costs, millions will not, underscoring one of the trade-offs wrought under the law’s goal to ensure most people have access to health insurance.…Insurers say the price and cost hikes result from new benefit mandates, additional taxes levied as part of the law and a requirement that they can no longer deny coverage to people with pre-existing medical conditions.

Translation: Bend over, Serf. Barack Obama’s transformation of America is a land of winners, that he picks, and losers. Mr.Weldzius and people like him are the losers. Here are some of winners.

Surprise! Union Thugs, Obama Supporters Realize That They’ve Been Had

Whatever else you can say, or not say about him, Barack Obama is a master con man. Now that he has been safely re-elected, many are realizing that the pending nightmare that we tried to warn them about is unfolding just as we predicted. Of course, the One’s signature achievement, the federal government’s takeover of the health care system, is the key to all the rest of his plans for us. Now that we passed the bill, and are finding out what’s in it, it turns out that a lot of people aren’t happy, including some of the law’s enthusiastic supporters. From the Wall Street Journal story entitled “Some Unions Grow Wary of Health Law They Backed,”

Labor unions enthusiastically backed the Obama administration’s health-care overhaul when it was up for debate. Now that the law is rolling out, some are turning sour. Union leaders say many of the law’s requirements will drive up the costs for their health-care plans and make unionized workers less competitive. Among other things, the law eliminates the caps on medical benefits and prescription drugs used as cost-containment measures in many health-care plans. It also allows children to stay on their parents’ plans until they turn 26. …

John Wilhelm, chairman of Unite Here Health, the insurance plan for 260,000 union workers at places including hotels, casinos and airports, recalls standing next to Barack Obama at a rally in Nevada when he was a 2008 presidential candidate.

“I heard him say, ‘If you like your health plan, you can keep it,’ ” Mr. Wilhelm recalled. Mr. Wilhelm said he expects the administration will craft a solution so that employer health-care plans won’t be hurt. “If I’m wrong, and the president does not intend to keep his word, I would have severe second thoughts about the law.”

Mr. Wilhelm, how do I break the truth to you? You expect the Obama administration to craft a solution? Do you also believe in the tooth fairy? I’ve got news for you, my gullible friend. This is their solution, and you can expect a continuing parade of horrors over the next year as the full scope of this mess is revealed. You know those senior citizens who withdraw cash from their savings accounts on the promise of getting their share of “found money?” It’s called “the pigeon drop,” and, in this case, you and anyone else who trusted the spawn of the corrupt Chicago machine by way of ACORN, the former Barry Soetoro, are the pigeons. Sadly, though, unlike the classic con, thanks to you, the rest of us have been dragged into this scam. Nicely played!

Meanwhile, Shazam! We’ve discovered another teensy weensy “glitch” in the law, on that the IRS regulations just released will not fix. From The Cherokee Tribune (Canton, GA):

Some families could get priced out of health insurance due to what’s being called a glitch in President Barack Obama’s overhaul law. IRS regulations issued Wednesday failed to fix the problem as liberal backers of the president’s plan had hoped.

As a result, some families that can’t afford the employer coverage that they are offered on the job will not be able to get financial assistance from the government to buy private health insurance on their own. How many people will be affected is unclear.

The Obama administration says its hands were tied by the way Congress wrote the law. Officials said the administration tried to mitigate the impact. Families that can’t get coverage because of the glitch will not face a tax penalty for remaining uninsured, the IRS rules said.

Congress said affordable coverage can’t cost more than 9.5 percent of family income. People with coverage the law considers affordable cannot get subsidies to go into the new insurance markets. The purpose of that restriction was to prevent a stampede away from employer coverage.Congress went on to say that what counts as affordable is keyed to the cost of self-only coverage offered to an individual worker, not his or her family. A typical workplace plan costs about $5,600 for an individual worker. But the cost of family coverage is nearly three times higher, about $15,700, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. So if the employer isn’t willing to chip in for family premiums — as most big companies already do — some families will be out of luck. They may not be able to afford the full premium on their own, and they’d be locked out of the subsidies in the health care overhaul law..

So, to review and summarize, many people will remain uninsured because they won’t be able to afford health insurance.

Somebody help me out here. I thought Obamacare was going to fix this problem once and for all. Could it be that those of us who suggested that this mother of all income-redistribution schemes would only make a challenging situation worse?
