Remind Me Again, Sen. McCain, Why We Want to Back Syrian Rebels?

Oh yeah, don’t you worry about it. These are the guys we want to link arms with. With the Washington Times:

Members of an al Qaeda-linked group in Syria executed a 15-year-old boy in front of his parents after kidnapping and torturing him for making disrespectful statements about Islam’s Prophet Muhammad, a human rights group in the region claimed.
Mohammad Qataa was seized Saturday in Aleppo by gunmen with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria — formerly known as the Nusra Front — after he was overheard saying during an argument with another, “Even if the Prophet Muhammad comes down [from heaven], I will not become a believer,” according toReuters.

The captors displayed the bloody and beaten boy to a crowd on Sunday, issuing a warning to those who might similarly speak of the prophet before shooting the teen.

Now, Bill Clinton is cheerleading for Barack Obama to listen to Sen. McCain and aid the Syrian rebels. Am I being cynical by suggesting that I suspect that Bubba is motivated to urge this action by something other than humanitarian concerns, or even America’s national interest? With the new foreign policy brain (less) trust over at the White House, led by the thoroughly inept Susan “Good Soldier” Rice, the latter is the last thing that will ever be considered. Why do I think that Bill Clinton might be hoping that Obama will be suckered into his own brand new war, which then Hillary could use against him in the upcoming election? Yes, he’s not running again, at least not unless he can get a couple of new Supreme Court Justices to clear the way, but as you well know, these politicians are motivated by one thing, their insatiable desire for power. To the extent that Obama is weakened, he would lose the ability to influence the ticket and otherwise continue to wield power behind the scenes.

Also, don’t underestimate the desire of the Clintons to get back at Obama for using Hillary’s vote in favor of the authorization to go to war in Iraq against her in 2008. After all, he never had to vote on that issue, yet he, ever the high-minded poseur, demagogued the hell out of HRC’s choice to support Pres. George W. Bush. It had to be especially galling, since although he did make several statements against the war, State Sen. Obama actually stated in November 2005, that “I think I would have agreed with our senior Sen. Dick Durbin and voted ‘Nay,” which leaves room for him to wiggle out of that position if it became politically expedient later.  I can imagine the Clintons gleefully rubbing their hands together thinking about sweet it would be to pound Obama over another war, one that he didn’t just vote for, but thoroughly owns, in the Middle East.

Or maybe I’m just succumbing to the corrosive cynicism that I always deplore. What say you?

Barack and Hillary Knew They Were Lying About Benghazi in September 2012

This story from CBS News appeared on September 20, 2012, back when CBS, and every other LSM outlet, was buying this baloney.

Marked by the U.S. Embassy seal, advertisements condemning an anti-Islam video appeared on Pakistani television on Thursday in an apparent attempt to undercut anger against the United States, where the film was produced. Hundreds of youths, however, clashed with security officials as they tried in vain to reach the embassy in Islamabad amid anger in many countries over the film’s vulgar depiction of the Prophet Muhammad.

The advertisements appear to be an effort by the U.S. government to dampen chaos surrounding the film and undo some of the damage to America’s image in the Muslim world. Violence linked to the movie has left at least 30 people in seven countries dead, including the American ambassador to Libya.(emphasis mine) Two people have died in protests in Pakistan.

Now, CBS News realizes they were played. Of course, given the fact that the Libyan president said immediately after the Benghazi terrorist attack that it WAS NOT a spontaneous protest over a video that no one saw, you’d think they would have caught on a lot sooner. A six-year old knew that the story they sent Susan Rice out to recite was laughable. Perhaps you might learn a lesson from this experience, my sycophantic Jurassic media friends?

The lid is coming off this coverup. From a no-longer fooled CBS News: 

The deputy of slain U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens has told congressional investigators that a team of Special Forces prepared to fly from Tripoli to Benghazi during the Sept. 11, 2012 attacks was forbidden from doing so by U.S. Special Operations Command South Africa.

The account from Gregory Hicks is in stark contrast to assertions from the Obama administration, which insisted that nobody was ever told to stand down and that all available resources were utilized. Hicks gave private testimony to congressional investigators last month in advance of his upcoming appearance at a congressional hearing Wednesday.

According to excerpts released Monday, Hicks told investigators that SOCAFRICA commander Lt. Col. Gibson and his team were on their way to board a C-130 from Tripoli for Benghazi prior to an attack on a second U.S. compound “when [Col. Gibson] got a phone call from SOCAFRICA which said, ‘you can’t go now, you don’t have the authority to go now.’ And so they missed the flight … They were told not to board the flight, so they missed it.”

More to come at Rep. Issa’s hearings the day after tomorrow. When will they learn. It’s not the crime. It’s the coverup.

One more point worth remembering. On October 22, 2012, the date of the last presidential debate, the villain of this story was not Hillary Clinton, who completely neglected her responsibility to protect our diplomats, nor her boss Barack Obama. It was Mitt Romney for daring to mention that fact. Check out some examples here, here and here.

Public Diplomacy

I’m sure most people have not heard of the term; I certainly hadn’t until recently. Let’s go to Wiki:

“PUBLIC DIPLOMACY refers to government-sponsored programs intended to inform or influence public opinion in other countries; its chief instruments are publications, motion pictures, cultural exchanges, radio and television.”

Which brings us to the tragic case of Anne Smedinghoff who was killed over a week ago in Afghanistan.

Smedinghoff, who was from suburban River Forest, died in an attack that also killed five other Americans more than one week ago.

Early reports said she was in an armed convoy when a suicide bomber detonated explosives, but now, an Afghan television reporter says the group was lost while walking from a book donation event.

The governor of the Afghani province was reportedly to be present at the book donations for the school for girls. So it is likely he was the target, but one cannot rule out Americans being targeted for their public diplomacy’s failure to understand the way Afghans treat women.

An FBI probe into the incident that killed 25-year-old foreign service officer Anne Smedinghoff and the others is still preliminary. … On Thursday, State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell said the group had been walking to the school but could provide no additional details other than identifying the most seriously wounded of three other diplomats injured in the attack. Ventrell said Kelly Hunt, a public diplomacy officer, was being treated at a U.S. military hospital in Germany.

I understand the engagement of the Afghani people in this ‘public diplomacy’, but sending a unarmed 25 year old girl into a war zone? Doesn’t that raise questions about women in combat? Did the service members protecting her die for public diplomacy? Just how important is this ‘public diplomacy’?

Here’s the troubling part.

I knew Anne well. I am sending you this as the Department has been actively recruiting her friends and coworkers to talk to the press or to write about her even while no Department memorial service will be held. Kabul held one, as did Caracas, and I understand the regional bureau did as well. Some posts voluntarily lowered flags to half mast, but no order was sent. I actually understand the flag issue, we don’t lower the flag for every member of the armed forces lost, and Ambassador Stevens, for whom we did lower the flag, was after all the personal representative of the President.

Friends of Anne have been in contact with AFSA to potentially hold a memorial this Friday in their space due to the failure of the Department to provide a time and space. I have to ask why the same Department that actively kept people from talking/writing about Ambassador Stevens even while publicly hailing him is taking this tack now. I and others, have been bothered by what frankly seems like a blatant use of her story for unclear purposes. The fact that the details emerging are now very different from what was originally released, even accounting for the fog of the situation, is also bothersome.

The current occupant of the Oval Office was …where when those four brave Americans were being murdered? When precisely did Barack Hussein Obama learn of the death of our Ambassador? What was he doing during the siege? Will David Axelrod ever be called on his deliberate lie, which conveniently took place right before the presidential election, that Obama was “talking to his national security folks well into the night” about the situation in Libya? Many of us are more interested in the answers to these questions than to the other weighty issues that seem to occupy the attention of over-the-air broadcast outlets, such as Chris Brown’s latest brush with the law, or an East Coast snowstorm. I commend to your attention this piece in The American Thinker concerning Hillary Clinton’s outburst “What difference — at this point — does it make?”

The simple question Senator Johnson revived gained a fever pitch of relevance when President Obama went on television, and to the United Nations, to condemn an anti-Islamic video which by that time he had to know was in no way related to the attacks.  (See here.)  And of course the precise context which heightened the relevance of this “video protest” lie was on display when, during a debate, Obama refused to answer questions about what he had done to help the Americans under attack, instead glaring condescendingly at Mitt Romney while delivering a carefully prepared (and frequently repeated) diatribe about his supposed “three orders,” none of which addressed the actual question as to what he had done during the assault to rescue the victims.

We now know, through Leon Panetta, The President of The United States, The Commander-in-Chief, the only person on the planet that could have authorized American troops into Libya, was nowhere to be found after a 30 minute meeting with SecDef Panetta where the president was told of the attack in Benghazi.
Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta on Thursday revealed he personally broke the news to President Obama that the U.S. diplomatic post in Benghazi, Libya, was under attack last year — but he and the president didn’t speak the rest of the night as the assault on the compound unfolded.
Remember: The President of The United States is the only person that can order troops into another country in an emergency like this. All the talk of orders to “stand down” at the airbase in Italy are meaningless without understanding this point. A general cannot order troops into another country- only the president can. But instead, this president went to bed.

This is an outrage. It is also outrageous that Mrs. Clinton would stall the Congressional hearing  that wants to get to the truth of the matter and then, when she finally appears before the committee, claims “What difference — at this point — does it make?”

If anyone would have used that line, say, after the Sandy Hook attack- “What difference — at this point — does it make?”- people would be gathering their pitchforks.

You see, “What difference — at this point — does it make?” is not an excuse: It’s a strategy.

As you can see, Mrs. Clinton enjoys some favorable numbers- even after her testimony. But look at this:

With the Middle East in flames, al Qaeda on the march, and many unanswered questions about the murder of 4 Americans in Benghazi, liberal icon/practiced liar Hillary Rodham Clinton not only managed to avoid the inevitable vicious attacks from the vast right-wing conspiracy as she left office as Secretary of State. Her exit path was strewn with flowers, as even Republican senators slobbered all over her and praised her to the skies for the terrific job she has done. Apparently frequent flyer miles count for a lot, since many of us are having a hard time identifying any other achievement for the former New York senator and serial adultery victim.

Meanwhile, the Obama administration continues to entertain and disturb us with unintentional comedy, not only the pathetic performance of Sec. Of Defense nominee Chuck Hagel. They are also attempting to do anything to distract us from our limping economy. Sayeth the Dear Reader: Pay no attention to those anemic job numbers, Subjects. Behold what I am doing for the children with gun control and amnesty for illegals!

After the Sandy Hook murders in Newtown, CT, sensing a good opportunity to exploit a crisis, Barack Obama and his left-wing, 2nd Amendment hating posse pulled their precious gun control plans out of a drawer, dusted them off, and put Joe Biden on the case. Joe promptly committed another gaffe, as in told the truth about the futility of their gun grabbing plans. I guess he figured if “what difference does it make?” worked out so well for his likely 2016 rival, Hillary Clinton, why not steal that line? After all, he has been known to, shall we say, borrow from other people’s speeches.

We’ll ask our special guest Larry Pratt of Gun Owners of America his reaction to Biden’s admission, as well as yesterday’s release of a ridiculous photo of Barack Obama skeet shooting at Camp David. What an amazing coincidence!  Apparently years of successfully running a con on millions of Americans has inspired a high degree of overconfidence in this bunch. Note to Obama and his PR flacks: one phony photo op depicting the One awkwardly handling a shotgun does not assuage our concerns about his hostility to the 2nd amendment. It is insufficient to overcome decades of statements, actions and votes the prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Barack Obama does not believe in the individual right to keep and bear arms. This is a man who, as our guest John Lott reminded us, back in the 1990’s, actively participated in Chicago’s attempt to sue gun manufacturers out of existence, and told his colleague Prof. Lott that he didn’t believe people should be able to own guns. This is also the man who appointed Eric Holder, who said that we need to “brainwash” people to be hostile to private gun ownership. As a candidate for the Illinois State Senate in 1996, Obama promised to support a ban on “the manufacture, sale & possession of handguns. Even if he does enjoy skeet shooting, that hobby, like hunting, has nothing to do with why the Founders included the 2nd amendment in our precious Constitution.

And, today is Super Bowl Sunday, and Wednesday is the anniversary of Ronald Reagan’s birth. We’ll celebrate both by getting your take on this year’s crop of Super Bowl commercials, some of which are definitely NOT G-rated, and by getting the inside story about attempts to raze Ronald Reagan’s boyhood apartment in Chicago. Is it really going to be torn down and replaced by a parking lot for Barack Obama’s presidential library? We’ll talk to the woman spearheading attempts to save it, Mary Claire Kendall.

Facts, Damn Facts, and Spin

I swear, you just can’t make this stuff up. After claiming ”What difference, at this point, does it make”? during the Benghazi hearing, Hillary has now changed her tune. Must be all the pressure from the vast right wing conspiracy.

“There are some people in politics and in the press who can’t be confused by the facts,” she said. “They just will not live in an evidence-based world. And that’s regrettable. It’s regrettable for our political system and for the people who serve our government in very dangerous, difficult circumstances.”

Frankly, this is a stunning admission of her incompetence. On one hand she says “what difference… does it make”, then the next day, it’s all about the facts. Facts that she, herself, proclaimed not to matter.

As noted in this post, Richard Nixon should have thought of the “What difference does it make?” defense to politicians lying to the American public, especially presidents.

How ironic that Hillary, who was part of the effort to destroy Richard Nixon, would now say lying by a presidential administration doesn’t matter.
