“I am a sexual predator. I need help.” Abuse Excuse, or Cry for Help?

Back in 2000, Alan Dershowitz wrote a book called The Abuse Excuse. From the description at amazon.com:

According to renowned defense attorney and Harvard law professor Alan M. Dershowitz, “abuse excuses” are enabling people to get away with murder – literally. From the Menendez brothers to Lorena Bobbitt, more and more Americans accused of violent crimes are admitting to the charges, but arguing that they shouldn’t be held legally responsible. The reason: they’re victims – of an abusive parent, a violent spouse, a traumatic experience, ethnic hatred, society at large, or anything else – who struck back at a real or perceived oppressor. And they couldn’t help themselves, they say. In this provocative and important collection of essays, Dershowitz reviews a wide range of recent cases – including those of O. J. Simpson, Tonya Harding, and Woody Allen – and argues that the current vogue in victim defenses is antithetical to the ideals of our constitutional democracy. For Dershowitz, the foundations of American society are individual responsibility and the rule of law. And people who claim to be above the law – whatever the excuse – are no more than vigilantes.

I couldn’t help but think about that when I saw this story about the “suicide note” allegedly written in 2004 by Cleveland Kidnapper/dirt bag Ariel Castro, which contains the sentences “I am a sexual predator. I need help.” From the U.K.’s Daily Mail:

In the suicide note purportedly written by Cleveland kidnapping suspect Ariel Castro, he claims that he was abused as a child and raped by an uncle, it was revealed today.

According to a law enforcement source, the letter contained details about his whole life and the three abductions – detailing what led him to kidnap the three women off the street and hold them captive for ten years,

The FBI found the note when they were searching Castro’s house and said they were fairly certain from its contents that it was a suicide letter.

Of course, I’m not buying the “cry for help” baloney. Here’s what gives up the con. Also from the Daily Mail story:

One other excerpt revealed by Taylor even appears to blame his victims for their predicament, saying: ‘They are here against their will because they made a mistake of getting in a car with a total stranger.’

This character may have been abused by his uncle, and this abuse may have contributed to his turning into a contemptible criminal, but it certainly doesn’t excuse it, whether it happened or not. That’s a given. Less obvious is what may sound horrifically cynical to some of you; specifically, that Mr. Castro wrote this letter and left it in the house anticipating the day that police would arrive to find it, where it would be there to set up the abuse excuse. He wouldn’t be the first pathological narcissistic sleaze ball to try to play that card.

The other thing I thought of was that Eagles’ song, “Get Over It,” which contains the line, “I’d like to find your inner child and kick its little ass.”

What say you?

Obama’s Sequester Con Blows up in His Face: Today on the Teri O’Brien Show

“Dumb, inexcusable and unnecessary.” That’s what Barack Obama called the unthinkable, the thing that he declared last fall would never happen, the so-called, “sequester,” mandatory reductions in the rate of growth for various federal agencies. Dumb, inexcusable, unnecessary, and also his idea, as it is now universally acknowledged. Here’s the reality: The One rolled the dice and he lost. He bet that the Republicans would be unwilling to allow the Defense Department, which is taking the brunt of the “cuts,” to see its budget reduced, and he was wrong. Now, he is engaging in a cringe-inducing, passive-aggressive game, one in which he says “If you don’t do what I want, and send more money to Washington for me to throw down various ratholes, I’m going to inflict as much pain as possible on the American people.” Thanks to Bob Woodward, everyone acknowledges that this horrible, unimaginably terrible reduction of 2.3% in the rate of growth in federal spending, yet he continues to refuse to own it. Is he delusional, and doesn’t he realize that the Lame Stream Media may be turning on him? This whole thing is starting to look like that Florida sinkhole, with Obama in the role of the guy who was swallowed.

This man’s unwillingness to accept responsibility for any of his actions is part of a pattern. He has spent to the last five years speechifying against “those who caused our economic problems in the first place,” by which he means the private sector in general, and those evil Wall Street profiteers specifically, several of whom became part of his administration. Our guest, Peter Wallison, Arthur F. Burns Fellow in Financial Policy Studies at AEI, general counsel of the US Treasury Department and White House counsel to President Ronald Reagan, will join us to discuss actual cause of the financial crisis of 2008. That’s the subject of his new book, Bad History, Worse Policy: How a False Narrative About the Financial Crisis Led to the Dodd-Frank Act. Surprise–the government, not the private sector, bears most of the responsibility, and “community organizers” like Barack Obama were instrumental in causing the mess in the first place. Whether it’s the sequester or the housing bubble, perhaps we should adopt the same policy that I advocated back in the day when O.J. Simpson was looking for “the real killer.” We should send the Celebutard-in-Chief a mirror.

Justice Scalia has the Left even more unhinged than usual over his comments in last Wednesdays oral arguments about Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act.

Tune in today for the rest of the story.

Jack was fascinating as usual, and he put his finger on the truly big story of the last 5 years, the breathtakingly corrupt media that has zero curiosity about anything that might damage Barack Obama and his agenda. Consider that we leave in a world where a serial adulterer/accused rapist, who received oral sex from an intern in the Oval Office, can be the keynote speaker at a political convention that condemned the opposing party’s “war on women,” a fact not noted by anyone in the Lame Stream Media.

In a Jail Cell in Nevada, O.J. is Planning His Appearance with the Oprah

During the interlude when O.J. Simpson, having gotten away with murder, was at large before committing another felony, a friend and I used to speculate that he could rehabilitate himself with one simple action; specifically, entering the Oprah’s confessional, shedding a few tears, and unburdening himself. Sadly for the former football superstar, he didn’t do it, and now he’s cooling his heels in a Nevada jail cell.

Now, here comes Lance Armstrong, who, having lied repeatedly to millions for years about his use of illegal performance enhancing drugs, chose that route. Will it work? Is redemption available for someone who has hurt and disappointed so many people?

It depends what we mean by redemption. Certainly, he needs cash, and his inevitable tell-all book will probably sell. If, however, by redemption we mean forgiveness and the chance to regain the admiration and respect of the public, I think that ship has sailed.  People are thoroughly disgusted with his incessant lying, but that’s nothing compared to the revulsion that they will feel toward him once he starts ratting out other people, which apparently he is prepared to do.

The Oprah notwithstanding, he is still in a lot of legal trouble. From CBS News:

Senior Justice Department officials have recommended that the government join a lawsuit filed by one of Armstrong’s former teammates that accuses the disgraced cyclist of defrauding the federal government. Armstrong’s U.S. Postal sponsorship prohibited illegal doping.

All things considered, O. J. probably has a better chance of being forgiven. He is black, after all, and he didn’t use a gun to kill his ex-wife and her friend.
